Have a Sleep Disorder? Try Non-Drug Remedies First

Tired Americans turn to pills for sleep - Worcester Telegram (subscription)

It seems that Americans and the American Medical Establishment are turning to drugs or pills for almost everything these days.  We take one drug to address one symptom, then one or two more to counteract the side afects of the first drug, etc.  But, perhaps we should first try to determine the actual cause oi the symptoms or disorders and attempt to address them directly without the use of drugs or pills.

Sleeping pills are the first thing most people think of when they have insomnia or other trouble sleeping.  " But are sleeping pills — which can produce unhealthy side effects — the best treatment for sleeplessness?"

Consumer Reports recently "...evaluated the safety, effectiveness, side effects and cost..." of a variety of drugs used to treat sleep disorders and published them in their CR Best Buy Drugs report.  However, they also advised that "... If you’re struggling with sleep problems, first consider non-drug therapies, such as relaxation techniques and improving sleep routines, and addressing any underlying health conditions."  To get all the details, read the full article by clicking the link below...

The Best Sleep Aid Is Good Sleeping Habits

Good sleeping habits are the best sleep aid - Gainesville Sun

"Pharmaceutical companies spend their advertising dollars to convince
you that the secret lies in a pill. Sales of sleep medications hit an
all-time high last year, with 43 million prescriptions written." We are turning our society into a society of drugs. The first thing the medical community wants to do for any health problem is to prescribe one or more drugs. One drug to mask the symptoms, then one or more drugs to deal with the side affects of the first drug, etc.

As with many drugs, the longer you take sleep medications, the less they work. They lose their effectiveness. Perhaps the first thing we should do is try to determine the root cause of the sleep disorder and then try to determine if there is a way of treating the cause of the disorder without drugs. What a novel idea! To read the full article, click on the link below...

Sleeping Difficulties Can Come From A Variety of Sources For The Elderly

Cross: Night frights - Woburn Advocate

According to Jack Cross, " Seniors' sleep problems are rooted in many sources. The source could be as simple as too much napping during the day, so that sleeping at night is difficult. There are also physiological changes occurring with age, and many seniors tend to have diseases that can make sleep difficult. For instance, people who suffer from congestive heart failure can't rest in a flat position, and the pain of arthritis keeps some awake at night. Medications for certain diseases also can impact sleep, and bladder or prostate problems prompt people to get up for bathroom breaks. These types of interruptions can fragment sleep. In addition, circadian rhythms - body rhythms that help determine when we sleep - change as we age."  However, another source of sleeping difficulties arises from anxiety associated wth the night.  Read about it by clicking on the link below...
